Douro River is the ideal place for the practice of leisure boating and several nautical sports, such as power boating, rowing and sailing. It has been the stage of several competitions in these sport categories.

Douro's waterway is 60 metres in width around the mouth of the river and in the mountains it is 40 metres in width. The river is marked with red buoys on the right hand side and green on the left hand side. Motorized boats must not go outside of these restricted areas.

All boats travelling up the river must carry the Douro Waterway Regulations onboard and maritime mobile services communication in VHF, with the channel permanently open on the emergency line (16) and the port line (12).

Some parts of the river are affected by tides which can lead to flooding in rainy seasons, mainly in Porto riverside area and in the Régua's quay. Before starting your journey, in order to avoid unpleasant situations, always check official information provided by IPTM - Instituto Portuário e dos Transportes Marítimos (delegação do Norte e Douro), Capitania do Porto do Douro, the Delegação Marítima da Régua and the Polícia Marítima do Douro.
